Uhle Boxes
Uhle boxes, sometimes known as felt cleaning assemblies, dewatering elements, drilled covers, or Uhle pipes, and Uhle box covers are an integral part of every paper machine’s press section. The Uhle box is designed to enhance uniform cross-directional dewatering and cleaning and minimize energy consumption on the press section of a paper machine. Uhle boxes are available with optional fixed, manual, or automatic Uhle box rotators. Uhle box rotators provide a safe and easy method to rotate the suction pipe for inspection, change the wear surfaces, and remove pitch and stickies from the covers. Kadant offers three polyethylene materials to construct Uhle box covers or strips, the Durwear™ HTb, Durwear A+, and Durwear XW, and ceramic options.
Fixed Uhle Box
A fixed Uhle box incorporates the optimal combination of weight and structural integrity to resist both deflection and vibration. Designed to withstand a vacuum of 20" Hg (0.07 MPa) and is available in 304L or 316L grade stainless steel. To ensure proper application, all Uhle box sizing is done using a proprietary sizing program.
Manual Uhle Box Rotators
The manual Uhle box rotator adds the feature of a jackscrew and hand-wheel assembly. This enables machine tenders to rotate the Uhle box up to 45° from the operating position for clean-up and inspection where required.
Automatic Uhle Box Rotators
The automatic rotation option uses a hydraulic motor and provides up to 270° of rotation. The rotation is controlled using a panel designed for easy access. The panel also serves to enclose an electric pump that drives the hydraulic motor located on the Uhle box.

FAQ
The Uhle box is typically located in the press section of the paper machine. It functions to remove water from the felt while also keeping it clean.
Change the Uhle box cover or wear surface prior to it being structurally compromised.
Kadant Uhle box covers have proprietary patterns that are proven to reduce felt deflection and wear, extending machine clothing life.
